Flour tortillas bought at the store typically have many ingredients that don’t even make the tortillas taste good. True Mexican tortillas are made with minimal ingredients and are light, fluffy, and taste delicious! Homemade flour tortillas are so easy to make. They take only about 30 minutes and the ingredients require kitchen staples. There are so many things that do taste good store-bought but tortillas with tons of ingredients definitely are not one of them.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 heaping tsp salt
5 tablespoons softened butter
3/4 – 1 cup warm water
Combine flour, baking powder, and salt into a food processor fitted with a blade attachment. Pulse the ingredients a few times to mix. Add the butter and process until the dough is mixed and crumbles. Then add water slowly through the food processor spout while the processor is running. Let the dough mix until soft and it cleans the side of the bowl. You don’t want it to be too sticky that it is leaving dough on the side of the processor bowl.
Remove dough from processor and form into a round disk on a floured surface. Divide and cut the disk into 12 even sections. Form the 12 sections into individual balls. Let the 12 tortilla dough balls rest for 10 minutes with a towel covering them.
Turn a saute pan on medium heat. Roll the dough balls with a rolling pin individually into a flattened tortilla. You may need to add more flour to the surface, so the dough does not stick. Once completely rolled flat, put on the heated pan. Cook each side for 20-30 seconds, until both sides are cooked and lightly browned. Continue the process until each tortilla dough ball is rolled out and cooked. Stack and cover each cooked tortilla until a towel to keep warm. Serve warm.
